Volcano Boarding

Leon – Nicaragua

León, Nicaragua’s fiery colonial gem, is a city where history and adrenaline collide. Once the country’s political and cultural heart, León brims with 18th-century churches, crumbling pastel mansions, and murals that whisper stories of revolution and resilience.

Cerro Negro

Beyond its baroque beauty, León is famous for one of Central America’s most thrilling adventures: volcano boarding. Just 30 minutes outside the city lies Cerro Negro, an active black-ash volcano that you can hike—and then race down—on a wooden board at speeds of up to 50 mph. It’s messy, exhilarating, and utterly unique. Most hostels can organise a tour to the volcano, at a reasonable price. They provide transport, the sledge and the all important boiler suits to stop you getting covered in soot. Once there you hike up the steep sided mountain before flinging yourself down on your wooden sleigh. The team at the bottom will measure your speed with a radar gun should you manage to get to there without falling off! You can go up again but it’s typically very hot, exposed and tiring so once is usually enough. A ice cold beer is provided for the drive back in open sided trucks. You will then spend the next few days picking black bits out of various orifices.

Back in town, León’s laid-back vibe makes it a favorite among backpackers. Budget hostels, open-air bars, and cheap street food line the cobblestone streets. You can feast on gallo pinto, the local Toña beer, and swap travel stories for just a few dollars.

With its blend of colonial heritage, youthful energy, and accessible adventure, León offers travelers the perfect mix of culture and thrill—proof that some of the world’s best experiences don’t have to break the bank.
